Dreams
1.My 16th

Dreams. Make sure you can remember your dreams if they are important to you. That's what I was trying to do anyway. I was doing well at school. I was getting straight A's in most of my subjects. Especially drama and performing arts. My dream was to become an actress. I wanted films with me in to be successful and great. I wanted to walk down the red carpet signing autographs. I even starred in local plays, nothing much. Though just because I am a girl, i didn't want roles that were really girly because that wasn't me at all. Sure, I liked boys and make up now and then but not all the time. I would like roles in films such as The Shooter, Die Hard, Black Hawk Down, Shoot 'Em Up, Rush Hour, Casino Royale. Anything with action I loved. I wasn't into girly movies much although i loved Dirty Dancing. You make sure you hold onto your dreams as they can be achievable. Though, for me. My dreams were the least of my concerns. I have something much, much more important on the line. My life!

It all started when i woke up this morning. The relief i felt was unbelievable. The thought of waking up and seeing my family was just the greatest feeling in the world. To you it may have seemed like an ordinary morning, you get up, have breakfast, brush your teeth, go to school or work. Not me. You see, for you, an average sleep, 7 hours or so pass. For me, it was longer, much much longer.
4 years had gone by. The last thing I remember was my 16th birthday and I was collecting something for my sister, Alexis. My 16th was the last birthday i was to celebrate before the accident.
I woke up that morning refreshed and excited. I was 16 today and was having a massive party in my house later. I lived in a normal semi-detached house on main street. I went to Santa-Clara mid-school and I led a normal life. I had invited all of my friends to come along for the big party. Of all my friends, Alesha, Tobey and Kiera were top of the list. They always came first besides me. Always. Alesha, Kiera and I were like any other girls, fussed over boys, which make up looks better, which bag looks better with which dress.

My mum, Sandra was born here in Santa Clara, my dad, K.J, however, was born in Massachusetts, but had moved all over the place ever since he was a young boy. Canada, Texas, Missouri, Idaho, Kansas. You name it, he'd been there. I wasn't an only child – thank god. I would have hated to be alone. 14 years ago, my sister Alexis, has been born. It was the highlight of my life. Although i don't remember much of me growing up. As no-one really does. As for the party planning, everything was a shamble as usual. Alexis was running all over the place looking for her make up and her babyliss hair straighteners. With her, everything had to be perfect. Everything. If the slightest hair was out of place, she would spent the next three hours sorting it out. She always got her make up on first thing in the morning. Today was no different. It was a special day for her as well as me. You see, most parents wouldn't allow a mixed party but my parents didn't mind. I could invite all of my friends, which of course included boys.

That brings me back to my sister. Alexis, had a crush on one of my friends. Who could blame her? He was gorgeous! We called him Tobes – though his proper name was Tobey. He was tall, 6”1, had brownish-black hair, blue eyes, baby face, he kept himself to himself, shy really. Nonetheless, he was a real laugh. A great person to be around. He was well fit. Although he was a bit older than me, two years in fact, the age difference didn't bother my sister in the slightest. She loved him. Never stopped talking about him. Which didnt bother me much as I thought he was gorgeous too. He was two years above me at school but he didn't mind hanging with me. He said he thought i was funny and a cool person. Me? Funny! Of all of things he could have said, he said i was funny!
1

Preparing for the party had to be perfect. The pool needed to be checked and the party equipment needed to be added in all the right places. The decorations had to look good. The food had to be perfect. But most of all, our clothing had to be fab. You see, Alexis was a vegetarian. Loved animals and couldn't stand the fact that people ate them. Me, i wasn't bothered really. I mean, don't get me wrong. Animals are cute and amazing but we need to live! We need a good diet and I'm sorry to say but meat is a part of that. That was another thing me and Tobey had in common. He didn't mind eating animals though he thought they were lovely things. He had a dog himself. His dog was called Munch. He had called him this because Much ate a lot of food apparently.
I was helping mum out when she said to me, “Janey, love, I need you to go to the dry cleaners and pick up Alexis' dress for her, O.k. hun?”.
“Sure Sandra”, I replied in an upbeat voice. I always called her Sandra. She didn't mind. Most parents would want their children to call them either Mum or Dad. Not my mum, my Sandra didn't mind. She was one of a kind. Always helping me out and being there for me. That's what mums are for.

I closed the door and crossed the road. As I was walking, I thought I saw one of my favourite celebrities walking his dog across the road. It couldn't have been. Though chance would have been a fine thing. Even if it was, I just would have let him be. Why bother him? He was only walking a dog. Something normal people like us do every day. He was no different. Sure, he had made films. Sure, but he was still human. So I walked around the corner of Main Street and was waiting to cross the road. It was busy at this time as everyone was coming home from work.
I waited and waited and finally the road was clear. I thought it was clear anyway. I remember the pedestrian crossing light going green, I began to cross the road and suddenly everything went dark. That was when you came in. I was re-telling the story to the police as i knew it. Though after that, i don't remember a thing. Did i get Alexis' dress? Did she get the dress off of me? Did my party even happen?

2.Accident

“Where's my dress? It doesn't take like a half an hour to go to the dry cleaners!”.Alexis exclaimed at Sandra.
“Maybe she got lost”, thought K.J.
“How could she get lost?. We have lived here for over 2 years!”.
“Doesn't mean she knows where the dry cleaners is”. Sandra explained that Janey had never been asked to go to the dry cleaners before and probably got lost. Maybe, even she saw a mate and got talking. The party wasn't going to start for another 4 hours at least anyway. Alexis spent the next hour fussing over whether her dress would actually turn up or not.

Some while later, turquoise coloured lights hit our room like sunset. Then someone knocking on the door which proved to be urgent. Alexis rushed to the door and opened it with a force that could have thrown it off of its hinges if she wasn't careful.
“Hello, are Mr and Mrs Stanton in?” A man in black clothing and bullet proof jackets asked me.
“Mom, someone at the door for you!”, Alexis said as she walked to her room.
“Hello sir, I am Mrs Stanton, though you can call me Sandra”.
What happened then seemed like an eternity. We were taken in for questioning. Being asked stupid questions such as “When did you last see your daughter?” “Do you know if she is OK?” All these questions lead to a simple solution. Though we were having none of it. The policeman wouldn't reveal anything though he said 'brace yourselves' as we were ushered to a car which took us to Santa Clara Hospital.

“Why are we here?”, Sandra said, her voice beginning to sound a little worried. He took us to the reception and told the nurse who we were. She told us to 'brace ourselves' and 'that it will look much worse than it actually is'. Suddenly, the hospital double doors opened and a person came through on a trolley with wires sticking out of her and tubes coming from her mouth. I overheard the conversation between the paramedic and the doctor. “Her GCS was 6 at the scene but when we were in the ambulance it dropped to 3. Her blood pressure is 120 over 80. She has had 10ml of metoclopromide and saline and I cant raise her blood pressure above 80”.
They rushed her trolley to the resuscitation room and began working on her. The same paramedic which brought her in walked passed me. I asked him what the girls name was – at first he hesitated but then he thought 'its just a name'. “Janey – we think. We found a pink frilly purse on her and it had Janey written on it”.
“Oh no!”, Sandra said as she ran to to resuscitation room and looked through the double door window.
Sandra rang Alexis and told her to bring K.J with her and to meet her in the reception area. Just then, a large beeping noise came from the room Janey was in and loads of doctors and nurses rushed into the room and started to perform CPR.
“NOO!”, shouted Sandra at the door. A doctor came out and asked her if this was her daughter. It turned out that the girl with all of the wires sticking out of her was in fact Janey.
“She is”, she said as she started crying. At that moment, Alexis and K.J turned up and all of them were taken to the family rest room.
“What happened?”, Alexis said. “Is it serious?”. Just then a doctor came in and said that Janey was suffering from severe brain damage as a result of the accident.
“What accident”, K.J said.

The doctor then explained that as Janey was about to cross 25th street, she was hit by a car and dragged under it. Then, the car sped off and left Janey as she rolled to a stop and hit her head. The driver then sped off and left her in the street. A passer-by called the ambulance and got half of the licence plate. We got A32B L. That's all.
“Who was the passer-by?”, Sandra managed to say through her tears.
“All we know is that it was a man who was walking his dog across the street”.
“Is she going to be ok?”, K.J said. The doctor the described the unbearable. He said that she was suffering from severe brain damage and as a result she now has Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma – which is a type of cancer.
“mmmmmm-what-about-the-party....?”, sobbed Alexis through a stream of tears.
“Oh lord! The party? Alexis you go home and have the party in honour of your sister. This could be her last party. I'll ring when we know more”.
“O.k mum, I'll do it for Janey”.

Alexis went home and rang everyone that the party was starting now and they could all come over. She also said that she had something to tell them all. Tobey hadn't been told this and arrived later. Ten or so minutes later everyone arrived asking where Janey was.
“Could you please all sit down?”. Everyone sat down as Alexis explained what had happened. “Janey was involved in a car accident earlier and is now in hospital, she has severe brain damage and as a result she now has cancer”.
Gasps and short murmurs shot around the room as everyone realised what had just been said.
“The party will still go on as planned as a sort of tribute to Janey”. Everyone agreed and began to dance and although they couldn't forget about the incident they still tried to have a good time.
Ding-dong. Knock knock knock. The door rang and Alexis rushed to open it. There, stood on the doorstep was non other than Tobes. He was as gorgeous as ever with a nice shirt and jeans on. He was carrying a bunch of flowers and a heart shaped box of chocolates.
“Oh, thank you!”, Alexis said blushing, checking he dress was ok.

“What for?”, he said confused.
“The flowers and the chocolates”. “They're lovely”.
“Oh, dude, there not for you – ahhhhhh.....is Janey around?”, he aforementioned while looking for Janey.
“Didn't you hear? She was involved in a car accident and is at Santa Clara Hospital”.
Tobey began to run to be by her side.
“What about the party?!”, shouted Alexis to Tobey as he was running.
“Janey could be dying and all you care about is a party?!”, a shocked Tobey replied.

He ran and ran and ran until he couldn't breathe to reach the hospital. He found her room and didn't leave her side until the next morning. Though he wasn't religious, he prayed and prayed to make sure that she would be ok and get through this.
Later the nurse came in and asked who he was.
“I'm her boyfriend”, he said without thinking.
“That's ok then. She is going to be ok. Slight trauma to the brain but we can sort it”.
“What about the cancer? I heard it's pretty bad”
“All we can do is give some drugs to help get rid of it. If they work successfully, we can operate”

Tobey woke early the next morning without realising where he was. Then suddenly, he remembered the horrific incident that had happened last night. The machine which was now keeping Janey alive started making a funny beeping noise. Doctors and nurses started rushing in.
“Whats up?”, Tobey yawned.
“Something is wrong. She has stopped responding to the drugs. We need to get her to theatre, now!”.
Some time later, a nurse came back and told Tobey that as a result of the cancer, Janey had slipped into a coma and may not recover do to the severe brain damage.
Tobey broke down and started crying. “She was the only one I ever loved, you know?”. “Though, I never told her, I always did as soon as I met her”. “Now, this could be the last time I spend with her”.
“We don't know the full information. She may survive”, said the nurse as she left the room.

Days passed and Tobey didn't leave her bedside. He spoke to her, read to her, played her music. Only left when he needed to. He decided to leave school so he could take full care of her when she woke. That was the only thing, when she woke.
He had to go home at some point, but that didn't stop him ringing the hospital to see if she was ok. He would ring all the time.
When he thought she was making progress, he got a call from the hospital.
“You need to come in. We can't reach Janey's parents – so you are classed as her next of kin”.
“I'll be there straight away!”.
When he arrived, the doctors told him that the only thing now which was keeping her alive was the machine. The machine was breathing and living for her. She had gone. He had to sign the consent forms to turn her life support off.
“You can't do this! She is alive! I know her! She wouldn't just die! I refuse to sign!”. Tobey ran out of the hospital to have a breather. A doctor followed him and explained that they would keep her going for the next few days and if she didn't improve, they would have to turn it off. Tobey agreed and went home for some rest. First, he felt he needed to speak to Mr and Mrs Stanton and see what they thought of the situation.

3. Don't leave me, please
As the days passed, Janey's condition didn't get any better, in fact, it got worse. The time had come. Tobey had to make a decision today. Turn her life support off and let her die – or leave it on and see her suffer. What choice did he have? He loved her that much that he would rather have not turned anything off at all. He agreed, turn it off and see Janey peaceful. It was a hard thing to do but he had to do something. He rang her parents and informed them of the situation.
“It will be turned off at 5p.m today. If you want to say goodbye, you'll need to come and see her before 5p.m so they can prep her”, said Tobey sadly. They agreed. They would all meet at the hospital at 3 so they could each have a private last word with her.
Tobey decided to have a word last as he thought it would be best for the family to speak to her first.

It was time. They were going to shut her life support off in two hours and the family were just gathering at the hospital to say their final goodbyes. They each went in one by one starting with Sandra, K.J, Alexis and finally Tobey.
“I'll always have a place for you in my heart. You were my special little girl”, cried Sandra.
“Be strong. Always be with you love me”, K.J said sadly. It was Alexis' turn to go and have a say.
“I always loved you as a sister – I'll always keep you in my heart were you belong. Thank you for being a great sister to me. Bye”. She walked straight out without looking back at the bed.
Finally, it was Tobey's turn. “Don't leave me please, please don't leave me. You are the only person I had ever loved. Your were my light, my everything. I always stood up for you when you needed it. I even stood up to your sister. I'd never thought I would be able to do that. The quiet one I used to be called. Not any more. You know she fancies me, don't you? Still she's not the one I love. That's you. Always has been always will be. I'll never love again. Love you loads. I'll miss you. Bye”. Crying, Tobey walked to the hospital double doors before turning around and blowing a kiss to Janey.

He left to meet the family sat in the family room discussing Janey's best qualities. Tobey didn't want to sit there, he felt much more comfortable in the room with Janey. He ushered himself back to the room and just as he did something amazing happened.

He began talking to her and just as he did, something truly amazing happened. As he said I Love You, Janey smiled. Truly and honestly, a short and quick smile rose on her face before quickly fading again.
“Nurse! Something amazing has just happened. Where are those papers I signed agreeing to turn off this machine?”, he said quickly.
She found and handed them to Tobey. “What will you be needing them for?”, she asked bluntly.
He explained that he didn't care what the machines read. He saw a smile on her face and he would refuse to let the nurse's turn the machine off.
“There's no life in her. Whatever there was, if anything, has long since gone ages ago”, sniggered the nurse.
“But she smiled! That must mean something”, he shouted.
The nurse called security and told them to remove Tobey from the hospital and to make sure he stayed that way until further notice. She explained that the 'smile' that rose upon her face was probably a muscle spasm, nothing more.

He was removed from the premises and told not to come back until the head nurse said so.
The went back to her room and started to unplug the machine wires. She asked the family if they wishes to see her one more time before she was to switch the machine off. The declined – thought it was too much on the family.
So, the nurse went back to Janey's room and switched off the machine. Though something wasn't quite right. Not right at all. Everything was unplugged yet there was still a beeping noise coming from somewhere in the room. She looked at the heart monitor and gasped.
Dee-de-de-de-de. She was alive! Breathing on her own.
“How is this possible?”, she gasped. She followed the wire down and it led to Janey's finger and saw the plug was still attached, she took it off and the beeping began to decease and eventually stop.
“Just the finally breath leaving the body – causing a slight pulse. Nothing further to it”.
She unhooked the oxygen and left the room – leaving Janey lying there. Alone.

It was time for the last good byes before Janey would be buried. As usual the family went first.
“You were always my favourite daughter – hope you can understand that. I know i wasn't the best of mothers but I did my best eh? Love you so much”, Sandra said before leaving the room distraught and really emotional. The rest of the family said what they wished to say.
The hospital had agreed to allow Tobey to go in and see her for one last time. He went in and sat down beside the bed and placed some red roses on Janey's bed. He was in there for 5 hours! Just talking and pouring his heart away to her – his last words were, “Love you loads!”. That was it. There wasn't anything else he could do - or could he? ........
