The Cannes Film Festival May 10-21 announced the films running for top honors and 'The Yards' is listed. Don't know if Mark will be there or not, but if he is, if anyone's going to France in May, take a short trip to Cannes and take some pictures eh?

Just saw on the official Cannes site that they are playing The Yards twice on May 20 (11 am and 10 pm). If anyone is in the area, see if ya can catch Mark and tell us how great the movie is!

Sophie,
I'm pretty sure Lianne said Mark is supposed to go to Cannes... Look up there in her posts and see! Oh, to be in France, now that Mark will be there! *sigh*!!
Or should I say, Ooo la-la!

Cannes is fun only if you're a star... or at least look like one
I went to the 50th anniversary of the Cannes Festival with a press pass, and I couldn't get into any press conferences (packed). Forget about trying to make it to a movie!
The only movies I could see were from the selection "Un Certain Regard"... The rest of the time, I hung out in the press lounge (hey! can't beat free coffee!) or walked along the beach... |

There is also a lot of material on the Cannes festival at the Variety magazine website, www.variety.com. When you go the home page, there's a "Cannes 2000" link on the left side of the screen and you can click on that. They have a lot more info than the official website -- daily news updates from the festival, reviews of all the movies after they are screened, and reports on how the films are being reviewed in the French press. The screening for the Yards is May 20 so they should have something about it on 5/21.
I have really high expectations for "The Yards." It's a terrific cast and it sounds like the kind of film where Mark can fully display his skill and range as an actor. I'm sure he'll be good in "The Perfect Storm" but in movies like that actors tend to be upstaged by the special effects... (and of course it's kinda painful to think about the ending...)

I'm just hoping that "The Yards" will be shown in my area! I think I'm nervous about this b/c I have yet to see any hype or press about it anywhere excepting this site, and I just don't want it to slip by me! The theaters here have a bad habit of not always giving films a fair shake. For some reason I have never understood, the epic flick of "Anna and the King" (Jodie Foster, Chow Yun-Fat), was only here for ONE WEEK. Gone before I ever got a chance to go see it! So I'm just afraid the same thing could happen with "The Yards", but I hope not!!

Well, it's not due to open until September and right now all the publicity is about the summer movies. It will be interesting to see what kind of reviews it will get at the Cannes festival.

Here's the link from the Cannes website, which takes you to the page featuring "The Yards". This film is in competition with 22 others, and will be shown on Saturday the 21st only, at 11:15 a.m. and 10 p.m., according to the site info. There are 7 possible awards up for grabs for these films in contention, including BEST ACTOR!!
Mark has FIRST BILLING on this movie!!
