Has anyone else read the novel by Pierre Boulle? It's brilliant; a lot heavier than the film.

Yeah I read it ages ago and it is a good book. I find that most books are better then the film versions.

Dear City Gal or anyone, do you agree with Boulle that animals have a mind/soul, that it is just a question of degree? Our dog understood every word you said to her and she got depressed when she had to go into hospital.

yes I do agree, I think that any living thing has a mind and a soul, I used to train police dogs so I know they do. Animals are far superior to any man in my opinion.

I think thats what Boulle was trying to get across.

You're right: animals aren't vindictive the way some people are. Also, one time my brother saw Guy the Gorilla in a cage in London zoo.He said that Guy was very depressed: he was a prisoner and he knew it. He is dead now, the poor bastard (the gorilla, not my brother).

Wasn't Guy the one who looked after the boy who fell into the cage?

Do you know the story? Lynne may know.

Yes I think he was the one that protected the little boy.But I believe animals are very intellligent.Have you ever noticed dogs particularly when a person is injured or not well they always know & act very gently towards you. They always look straight at the wound also. What about doplhins all the reports on how intelligent they are.

There was a story in last week paper about a dog who crashed through an iced over river and a seal came to his rescue by pushing him back through the hole and staying with him until help came.

Animals always amaze me!

One time our dog(Greta) put her front legs around my mother when she was upset and our other dog (Booboo) used to stand in front of the door to stop you going for a walk without her.

My friend had a massive alsatian dog called Sam.He would always let people into the house but as soon as men would get up to leave(only men mind you)he would nip their bums.He was a massive dog but he was lovely.
Do you know any pets with funny habits?

Dear LYNNE,It sounds to me as if Sam was jealous of male visitors ; that's if your friend was female. Our dog Greta had many funny habits: she used to like to sit on top of the piano when your back was turned even though she'd been told not to. Annoying people was that dog's idea of rock and roll.

My grandparents lived on a farm and they had a few dogs but the one German Shepard would meet you at your car and would put his mouth around your hand but never bite and lead you down the walkway to the front door. he wouldn't let anyone go into the barn yard before going to the house to say hello first.
